An aging population increases demand for medical care

America’s medical industry is growing due to the increase in people who are gaining access to healthcare, but also the increase in people who require it.

America is an aging country where the number of residents becoming senior citizens each year is steadily growing. With older residents often requiring additional medical care, the demand for healthcare services will remain high in the coming years.

That includes an increase in the treatment of injuries sustained from falls.

“As the population ages and people live longer in bad shape, the number of older Americans who fall and suffer serious, even fatal, injuries is soaring,” wrote Katie Hafner in an article for New York Times. “So the retirement communities, assisted living facilities and nursing homes where millions of Americans live are trying to balance safety and their residents’ desire to live as they choose.”

In the same article, Hafner presented the statistics that show senior citizen injuries are a growing problem.

“The number of people over 65 who died after a fall reached nearly 24,000 in 2012, the most recent year for which fatality numbers are available — almost double the number 10 years earlier, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,” Hefner reported. “And more than 2.4 million people over 65 were treated in emergency departments for injuries from falls in 2012 alone, an increase of 50 percent over a decade. All told, in the decade from 2002-2012, more than 200,000 Americans over 65 died after falls. Falls are the leading cause of injury-related death in that age group.”

Medical facilities across the country are experiencing a rise in senior citizen patients, along with increases in other demographics as more Americans gain access to healthcare through new healthcare laws.

This type of growth in demand for medical care means there is also a growing need for workers in various positions at healthcare facilities. That includes medical assistants, which can find work in doctor’s offices, hospitals and clinics.

The healthcare industry is growing in nearly every part of the country, including in the Los Angeles area and southern California. For those who are interested in taking advantage of the growing healthcare industry, A-Technical College offers a holistic medical assistant training program that is equipping students with the skills and experience today’s medical employers are looking for. Medical facilities of all types are looking for more medical assistants, especially those who have relevant training and experience with today’s most used processes and systems in the clinical and administrative functions of healthcare facility like a doctor’s office or clinic.

Medical assistants serve a hybrid role in many medical facilities, often assisting medical professionals like doctors and nurses, while also performing administrative duties, such as looking up medical records and overseeing patient billing. This type of dual nature of the medical assistant professional means today’s healthcare employers are looking for applicants who have an ability to juggle different tasks, are organized and have good communication skills. This is also a professional that requires specific training and experience, which is why many jobseekers considering a medical assistant career have turned to A-Technical College.

As the number of Americans needing healthcare continues to grow, there will also be an increase in the demand for professionally trained medical workers. If you are looking for a long-term career in a stable and growing industry, then becoming a medical assistant might be the right fit for you. Employers across the country are looking for thousands of newly trained medical assistants and applicants with training from a respected school like A-Technical College are often at the top of the list for employers.

If you have a desire to enter the growing medical industry and possess skills in communication, multitasking and customer service, the medical assistant training program A-Technical College might be the right option for you. Students with relevant experience and training in medical assistant skills are finding a world of opportunity across the healthcare industry, especially as the demand for medical service and medical employees continues to grow.
